Sunfish

The Sunfish was built in 1960 in Venice, CA She is a “Jeffries” model boat designed for the coastal waters of Southern California. For the first 40 years of her life she was the passenger ferry for Island Packers company. In 2005 she was stripped down to bare wood and rebuilt by Andy Volaski to be re serviced as a kayak/dive/fishing boat. The racks above her decks hold 20+ kayaks for plenty of sea cave adventures to be had. In addition to an open deck, she has indoor seating, a galley, head, changing room, and an easy access swim platform.

The swim platform off the stern makes getting on and off of the kayaks easy for all ages. This is a huge benefit of an Anacapa Caves and Coves Adventure, as we do not need to launch through waves on a rocky beach to start or finish our kayaking trip.

On all crossings, Channel Islands Expeditions crew are at watch for all sorts of marine wildlife. Dolphins swim over to her while underway to surf the pressure wake, a site that never gets old! Whales are also common to view along the way, and we always stop to hang out with these guys. On special occasions, we will shut off all engines and float with the ocean while listening to the chirps and songs of the whales.

The Sunfish has been visiting these islands for 50+ years and she is ready to take you on your first, second, or twelfth visit!
